Hello everyone and welcome back to the blog! How are you all feeling today?
I seriously have to do these discussion posts more often. I started with this series a long time ago, and we are only at number 5. Whoopsie?
As the title says, I’m going to talk about Paperback versus Hardcover books. What are the pros and cons and an overall view at the end. I would also appreciate it if you can tell me in the comments what your thoughts are about this every day dilemma of a bookworm. Paperbacks or Hardbacks?
And now, without further ado, let’s start!

Paperbacks
Paperbacks have always been my go-to. I always buy them, and they fit nicely on my shelves. So let’s start with the pros and cons.
📚 PROS:
- The Price is definitely affordable. You can find a book under €10, and even those between 10 & €15 are still affordable and in everyone’s budget.
- As I’ve mentioned above, the size. It fits everywhere. In your purse, in your hand, when you’re reading in bed, it doesn’t hurt as much when the book falls on your face. (Because that hurts a lot! I had a lot of experience with books falling on my face.) I could go on with the benefits of the size.
- A Paperback is practical. You can read it everywhere you want without having to worry about what it’s going to look like afterwards. You don’t have to pay attention to the dust cover because there isn’t any.
📚 CONS:
- You will unfortunately crack the spine at one moment or the other. If you don’t, please let me know what kind of sorcery you are performing, and may I join your cult, please?
- It takes a hell of an amount of time for Paperbacks to come out if they are first being published as Hardcovers. And we all know that bookworms are impatient, me included.
- The book size. Sometimes paperbacks in a book series don’t always fit. Which is annoying most of the time. However, I have to admit, that I’m used to that problem now, lol.
Hardcovers
Hardcovers are so pretty. I think we can all agree on that. Besides, Hardcovers also give me the ancient vibes and I just love that!
📚 PROS:
- The beautiful dust covers are definitely worth the price. Sometimes I ask myself how they do them so pretty? And I’m always jealous that Paperbacks don’t come with the dust jackets.
- Hardcovers are also great because of the quality. As they are made to be long-lasting and are not supposed to “crack” a hardcover is definitely worth the money.
- They look so pretty on shelves.
📚 CONS:
- Hurts when they fall on your face because you’ve been reading while lying in bed. I’m talking from experience here!
- Not everyone can afford them.
- Even though they look pretty on your shelves, they take more space than paperbacks. So you are not able to put as many on one row.
My personal preference will always be Paperbacks, BUT everyone is different and has different preferences. For some of you, Hardbacks are your favorite kind and for other people it will be completely different. What do you prefer? Please let me know in the comments below.
