About the book

Synopsis:

A sweeping YA fantasy about legacy, betrayal, sisterhood, and politicizing emotion in the quest for powerโ€”all balanced by a slow-burn LGBTQ romance.

For centuries, the citizens of Velle have waited for their New Maiden to return. The prophecy states she will appear as the third daughter of a third daughter. When the fabled child is finally born to Velleโ€™s reigning queen all rejoice except for Elodie, the queenโ€™s eldest child, who has lost her claim to the crown. The only way for Elodie to protect Velle is to retake the throne. To do so, she must debilitate the Third Daughterโ€”her youngest sister, Brianne.

Desperate, Elodie purchases a sleeping potion from Sabine, who sells sadness. But the apothecary mistakenly sends the princess away with a vial of tears instead of a harmless sleeping brew. Sabineโ€™s sadness is dangerously powerful, and Brianne slips into a slumber from which she will not wake. With the fates of their families and country hanging in the balance, Sabine and Elodie hurry to revive the Third Daughter while a slow-burning attraction between the two girls erupts in full force.

A must-read for fans of the BookTok sensations Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson, and These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong.

Review

Elodie is not happy that her younger sister will get the throne because Elodie wants to protect Velle. But she can only protect it by having the crown. Therefore Elodie tries to debilitate her little sister but things go absolutely wrong and no she has to save the Third Daughter as well as Velle.

This story was really captivating and I just couldnโ€™t get enough of it. The read was very emotional and also dealt with anxiety which is very important in my Loleyes.

I loved the writing, the worldbuilding and the romance which was a very cute one. I would also say that the pacing is a fast one and I was surprised to see that it didnโ€™t take me long to finish this wonderful read.

There are a lot of twists and turns in this one which is something I immensely enjoy in High Fantasy books. Youโ€™ll also scream at the end because of what happens but I believe that it will be a great start for the second book

This has been my first book by Tooley and it will certainly not be my last one! I highly recommend it to every fantasy lover in the community.
